The Poole 'Wessex Marine' Pirates recorded their biggest league score since 15th May 2024 on Wednesday night with a 61-29 thrashing of the Workington Comets -- the same club that they rode against in that May 2024 fixture!
Poole restricted their visitors to just one heat advantage all evening, that coming as late as heat fourteen when Tate Zischke made the running whilst Cooper Rushen and Mitchell Cluff traded places behind him. Rushen made the ultimate pass to secure second, a move that almost opened the door for Poole's guest Luke Harrison , but Cluff, who had a bit of a luckless evening, held firm enough to give the Comets something to cheer about.
A heat later it was the Poole fans on their feet, as Richard Lawson produced the ride of the night when he reeled in Jonas Jeppesen on the last lap. The 'Rocketman' said,
"Well, the track kind of went to just one line towards the end and you can see there on the first turn the black marks. That's the rubber from the tyres and you actually get traction off of that. So, everyone kind of aims for that and Jonas [Jeppesen] was on it and I thought I will stick with him for three laps and then on the last one decided I'm going for it. I had to go wide and yeah, luckily, we got it. It felt like an eternity since we have ridden here so yeah, it is nice to get a good win and with everyone checking in with points."
Poole promoted themselves a place in the SCB Cab Direct Championship table and now sit in third place, just two points behind leaders Glasgow, who have ridden three more fixtures than the Pirates.
