REACTION: 'CHAUFFEUR COMPLIN' HAS CAUSE TO BE CHEERFUL

5/08/23

Chauffeur Lee Complin claimed he had extra reason to perform well for the Poole 'Wessex Marine' Pirates in their victory over the Berwick Bandits on Saturday, as he couldn't face an ear-bashing from team manager Gary Havelock on the way home!

Complin, called up late on Friday to cover for the injured Adam Roynon, admitted "clearly it was a last minute decision for Poole to ask me and obviously I was raring to go as it is my home track so to speak so I was begging to come here really. I love riding here. It's a racers track. Obviously it was a bit slick today because of the weather but it still produced some good racing I thought. It was good to be part of a Poole team and especially with Havvy as manager. Me and him go back many years and he is like a good old friend, you know. In fact I picked him up on the way here and I've got to drop him off so good job I did alright or he would have been bending my ear one the way back!"

Complin scored a valuable paid eight from his four rides, contributing by being part of two 5-1 heat advantages for the Pirates that really enabled them to set their stall out, and record an unprecedented first away victory against a Berwick side. The 50-40 result had all seven duty Pirates recording at least one win or paid win during the course of the evening, with Kyle Newman finishing his night , his first completed meeting in the main body of the team this season, unbeaten from his last brace of races.  Speaking afterwards, the smiling Newman said, "it wasn't looking good to start with and I had to do something. I made a few changes in fact before the start of my second ride and the bike felt really good out of the traps even though I ran another last as I was just struggling to get past, and so I just tweaked something on my clutch as I didn’t really want to change anything on the bike and bang. Two starts and a win and a paid win".

Poole will now prepare for the visit of league leaders Oxford at Wimborne Road on Wednesday night which hopefully will be their first home meeting for the best part of a month.
