RESULT: POOLE V SOMERSET - KOC QUARTER FINAL 2ND LEG

27/06/18

Any lingering cup aspirations the 'Volvo Cars' Poole Pirates may have had, facing a fourteen point first leg deficit, were shattered in the early stages of this quarter final second leg, despite Brady Kurtz and Linus Sundstrom firing home an opening 5-1 advantage over world champion Jason Doyle and New Zealand champ Bradley Wilson-Dean.

The Rebels response was instant, emphatic and heart-breaking for the Dorset loyals. Their recent acquistion Nico Covatti combined with Jake Allen to wipe out that opening heat score and then rapidly the visitors assembled a 10 point lead on the night.

It took until Grajczonek's heat 7 victory before the Pirates were to experience a race winner again, and that was quickly followed by, arguably, the only piece of cheer the home fans could muster as Kacper Woryna, the sole Pirate after Sundstrom had fallen on the south turn first time of asking, outpaced world champion Doyle and led him home in heat 8.

Sundstrom showed no ill-effects from that fall, nor indeed another crash in heat 10 when he tangled with Wilson-Dean, an incident that forced an early interval. But after the break Sundstrom came out to secure another 5-1 with Kurtz, although by now the semi-finals were beyond the Pirates reach.

Woryna, Kurtz and Klindt were all to claim race wins over the last third of the meeting which in itself was slipping by, but Klindt's win had Woryna storming through into second place to offer up a chance of the draw on the night as the final heat approached.

Former Pirate Jack Holder, unbeaten in his first three rides before adding two third places, was the victim of the battle for the first bend and he was forced to sit out the re-run under medical advice, to be replaced by Lawson. But it was Doyle who denied the Pirates even the consolation of not losing on the night as he stormed to victory, ready to lead the Rebels into a semi-final encounter with Belle Vue, and Pirates now only having the SGB Premiership to focus their attentions on.
