REACTION: WORRALL CLAIMS PIRATES KEEN TO MAKE WIMBORNE ROAD A FORTRESS

12/07/23

Poole skipper Steve Worrall continued his hefty points haul since taking charge of the Pirates' number five race jacket, with a top scoring thirteen point return as the Pirates maintained their unbeaten league form at Wimborne Road, picking up a 54-36 victory over the Berwick Bandits.

Celebrating his call up to the Team GB squad for this month's Speedway World Cup, Worrall, who banked a paid maximum last week,  only dropped one point this time around, and that was to former Pirate Rory Schlein in heat thirteen.

It was Worrall who 'cheered' the Poole fans up by registering their first race winner when he took the first of four victories on the night in heat four, and he claimed afterwards "It was another solid night and off the back of last week so that was good to be scoring what I know I can. I was away for a little bit but the last two meetings I have felt really comfortable  and I am happy with how the bikes are working and the track's fantastic  so everything seems to be working well personally and you know as a team we are still winning, we are still scoring points so happy days. We need to make this place a bit of a fortress, like we did with Glasgow last week , we took the scoreline that far so it's sort of , well I wouldn't say impossible to lose, but they've got a big job on their hands when we go to their place."

The Pirates were held in the early exchanges of the meeting and it wasn't until Worrall and Kyle Newman combined for a heat seven 4-2 that allowed the home side to edge ahead, but once there they steadily built up a points advantage that puts them in a strong position for the aggregate bonus point when they visit Berwick next month.

Adam Roynon put in an excellent night's work from reserve with a paid six return, including a heat eight victory,  whilst Ben Cook fired in a ten point score despite suffering engine problems whilst leading heat three, but went on to win three of his remaining four rides.

There were race wins too for Richard Lawson and Newman whilst Zack Cook played his part in two maximum heat advantages, one with brother Ben the other with Newman, whilst Schlein scored no fewer than fourteen of Berwick's thirty six point tally.
