REACTION: PIRATES AND BRENNAN MAX OUT

28/07/24

The 'Wessex Marine' Pirates made it a maximum haul of the available SGB Cab Direct Championship points on offer from their mini-Northern tour at the weekend and Tom Brennan claimed his second paid maximum in the space of four days, as he went unbeaten at Workington on Saturday afternoon.

After their narrow, but sensational victory at Glasgow on Friday, the Pirates made life somewhat easier for themselves in their maiden visit to the Northside circuit, even having the luxury of conceding a 5-1 in the opening heat.
Gary Havelock's immediate reaction to the 53-37 victory was simply 'Wow!", before adding "what a performance. Total domination today. It's amazing to see, you know. I think, since we dropped into this league, I know we have always had good sides, but right at this moment I don't think we have ever been better. So, touch wood and keep everybody fit then all I can say is that it will take an absolutely fabulous team to beat us. It's down to us now. Down to the boys. How badly they want it and looking in each of their eyes then I can tell you, they want it. They really want it."
As for the maximum man, Brennan, was quick to acknowledge his team-mates rather then revel in self glory "the whole team clicked perfectly, the sun was out the whole meeting so all in all it was a good day. It's been a good tour. Having a busy weekend is always good. You are fresh on the bike and the mind's ready and we might be a long way from home right now but the journey back is certainly going to be a lot easier.
Poole's reserves Sam Hagon and an ever improving Vinnie Foord addressed the balance in heat two with a match levelling 5-1 of their own and from there on in it was effectively all Poole. A sequence of 4-2 advantages built up a six point lead before two more 5-1's went Poole's way, including a hugely impressive ride from both guest Ashton Boughen and Foord in heat eight as they got ahead of the vastly more experienced Claus Vissing.
The result was virtually "in the bag" before the home side could muster their second race winner, Craig Cook getting the better of his two name-sakes after a ruthless move to muscle Zach out of pole position. The Workington favourite then inspired the Comets to a 5-1 in heat twelve to mathematically keep the draw a possibility, but Lawson and Brennan responded instantly in heat thirteen to guarantee all three league points, before a small piece of history was made as Workington's Gold Trophy winner, Celina Liebmann featured in her first heat maximum in Britain, leading home Jason Edwards in a re-run heat fourteen after Zach Cook had been disqualified as he straightened up and rode directly into the air fence in the initial staging of the heat.
