REACTION: LAWSON LEADS PIRATES TO TRIUMPH OVER TIGERS

31/07/24

Having received the customary celebratory bumps from his team-mates, after a perfect night's work at Wimborne Road, Richard Lawson turned to the bumper Poole crowd and thanked them publicly for their support.

"I want to thank you guys tonight for such a good turnout and what you did there with your wonderful support was great!"
Receiving the Rider of the Night award for his fifteen point maximum, his third full house this season but first in this year's Cab Direct Championship, Lawson quipped "Fifteen points is good but it doesn't help the average" and turning to his team-mates,  added " I don't think these lads know the rules anymore. I try and let them through but hey that's how it was. Obviously Glasgow were good tonight and they pushed us early on but it is always good to get one over on them as they are always a formidable team and obviously we owed them a big one so yeah it was good to win."
The balmy sunny day attracted a very good crowd as the Pirates, against the defending league champions, went in search of their 41st consecutive home win in official fixtures and extend their current all match run to seven.
Recovering from a 8-10 deficit, after track debutant Matej Ivacic and Leon Flint had given the Tigers a heat three maximum, impressively over the solid engine room pairing of the Cook brothers, the Pirates came on strong. The ever-improving reserve, Vinnie Foord and back-from-injury Tobias Thomsen combined for a 5-1 over James Pearson and Jack Smith in heat eight, before the Cook brothers redeemed themselves for that early deficit, securing a comprehensive maximum over Cornish duo Chris Harris (riding the heat as a tactical substitute) and Tigers' guest (in place of former Poole skipper Steve Worrall) Ben Barker in heat nine.
Foord added his eighth point of the night when he held off Flint in heat twelve and although the Tigers gained a consolation 2-4 in heat fourteen, that was sandwiched between two more maximum scores for Poole, both inspired by Lawson to give Poole a twenty point margin of victory, but more significantly three more league points to stretch their lead at the top of the table.
