PREVIEW: PIRATES TARGETING THE BONUS TO SEE THEM THROUGH THE BSN GROUP

31/05/24

Their place in the semi-final stages of the BSN Series will be sealed if the Wessex Marine Pirates score thirty three points or more at the Coliseum,  Plymouth on Saturday night but will have a slightly different structure about them.

The introduction of the June averages sees Sam Hagon move into the main body of the side, although it will be for one meeting only, as Tobias Thomsen doesn't attain his official average until June 5th, having ridden his sixth mandatory meeting only on Wednesday.

Making his debut at the Devonshire circuit, Thomsen looks ahead to his new position with some intrepeditation, admitting "to be fair I like being at number two because I like going out in heat number one and I want to race the big guys, but hey, it is how it is, you've still got to win the races and the number on the race suit doesn't really matter in the end as it all about just making the points. That said, it's not the worst place to be at reserve because I have just heard that place is not like a normal speedway track so I think I am in for a shock, but we will see. Hopefully though I can go there and continue making the starts which are now slowly coming together. I know I am not quite there with them yet but it is all going in the right direction."

The reshuffle between Hagon and Thomsen will be one of two changes for the Pirates as the "engine room" of the team is being switched around, with Zach Cook at three and Tom Brennan at four.

Brennan had been due to the miss this rescheduled trip due to a prior commitment with his Polish club, Gdansk, which took precedence as it was in the calendar ahead of this re-arranged BSN tie, but on Friday that meeting, at Rybnik, was cancelled, thus allowing the influential points scorer to take his place in the Poole side.
Zach is one of two Pirates very much going under the radar this season. He, and his brother Ben, the captain of the Pirates, have regularly been weighing in with a string of consistent scores, and the youngest sibling, Zach, returns to the track where he began his British career and will no doubt be looking to replicate his paid thirteen from five rides that he racked up on his last visit to the Ocean City.

Hosts Plymouth are subject to changes themselves with Nico Covatti still unfit after his brave attempted comeback at Wimborne Road in the corresponding fixture didn't quite go to plan, whilst Kyle Newman is unavailable for this revised date.  The Gladiators are expected to operate rider replacement for Covatti, whilst their cover for Newman is yet to be confirmed.

Teams
Plymouth (TM Garry May)  R/R or Guest for Nico Covatti, Alfie Bowtell, Dan Thompson, TBC for Kyle Newman, Ben Barker, Joe Thompson, Jacob Hook
Poole (TM Neil Middleditch)  Richard Lawson, Sam Hagon, Zach Cook,Tom Brennan,  Ben Cook, Tobias Thomsen, Max Perry
