Previewing Glasgow v Poole - SGB Cab Direct Championship

27/07/23

Poole 'Wessex Marine' Pirates number one Richard Lawson believes that the Pirates have more in their locker and are capable of winning Sunday's league meeting at Glasgow.

Following their narrow 42-48 defeat at Ashfield last weekend Lawson looked ahead to this weekend's league encounter and admitted "I believe we have more in us. We knew what we needed to do in the BSN Final, we had that big lead after doing the hard work down at Poole and I am not saying we weren't trying, but it was really a case of just getting it over the line and  nevertheless we pushed them on the night and were always in touch with them. When it comes to going for the league points on Sunday I feel that we have an extra gear."

The man he deposed in the current Poole team at number, skipper Steve Worrall believes the key to success is communication. "It is important that as a team we all keep talking to each other and working things out" he claimed, adding "We all felt that in the BSN final the track at Glasgow was riding a lot faster than it used to and just by talking and communicating with each other we were able to benefit and make the changes as we went. I was pleased that I had that speed in my last ride and can take that into the next one. I mean, one guy might have figured it out and going quick, and whilst you have got to take into account of and factor in so many things like he might weigh a lot less than someone else or has a completely different engine turner, you obviously know your engines personally, but as long as you talk and get ideas and share them then it can only help. You know, the bloke down the bottom end of the pits might be completely off with his set-up and because of where he is it might not be easy to see what others are doing so you have got to keep communicating and it is not always easy, as it can be tough to catch a break because you have two riders out on track, so it can be hard to get everyone together so when there is a track grade or something then I know how important it is as captain that you try and do that and keep everyone talking and fired up and hopefully by the end of night you can get the results you are looking for."

Whilst the Pirates will retain their same set-up for Sunday, Glasgow are forced into a double change at reserve. The rescheduled date clashes with Lee Complin's wedding and so Connor Coles will guest for him, whilst Ace Pijper is competing in the Under 19 championships in Zarnovica, Slovakia over the weekend and so Sam Hagon will deputise.
