REACTION: PIRATES SECURE BIGGEST WIN FOR SEVEN YEARS

7/06/23

Club owner Matt Ford flew in from his chateau in France to manage the Wessex Marine Pirates to the club's biggest victory since August 10th 2016, as the Pirates made it a productive two days, gaining five points through their home and away triumphs over Plymouth.

With Neil Middleditch unavailable, Matt took charge in the pits, although he had little to do as the Poole side were well fired up for their sixth clash of the season against their South West rivals and they ran out victorious by 64-26, for an aggregate 110-70 score.

Opening and closing the meeting with sequences of three successive maximum heat advantages the Pirates were far too strong for the visitors, with only Richie Worrall offering up any real resistance with back-to-back race wins to arrest the Pirates early charge. Other than a rogue 5-1 advantage from Ben Barker and Dan Gilkes in heat ten, by which time the Pirates were well on their way to securing the maximum league points return, the Gladiators had very little response to Poole's dominance.

Maintaining his fine form, Kyle Newman again went through the card with a bonus point in each of his rides and was the only unbeaten Pirate with a paid 12 score whilst Ben Cook came close to a full house with a 14 score, beaten only by Richie Worrall in heat four.

In addition, Poole skipper Steve Worrall bounced back to form with a paid ten, his dropped points coming in that tenth heat. Wrapped around that were two impressive defeats of his brother and he had plenty of praise for the track maintenance team. "I think it [form] comes down to confidence, you know and a bit of fresh air makes the world of difference. You can ride the track as you know you should ride it and as you know how to ride it and also it helps when the conditions are as they were."
"From heat one you've got a nice fair race track. It's smooth and you're not having to go through holes and it looks like a farmer's field. Conditions were perfect and all seven of us rode really well and that’s what we are capable of."
"We started the season with them scores and we finished last season with them scores, you know, but the last few weeks we've been getting run pretty close at home which, you know, it does ring alarm bells but especially when I'm starting off on the back foot straight away in the first heat. But tonight showed what we can do. We had the right track, we had it how we wanted it, which, you know, we've been working hard the last few weeks with the track men and we finally got it back to what we know and what we like, and it made that world of difference."

Poole move on to seven league points, the maximum available to them at this stage, and their next team outing is on Friday week (16th June) when they return for league combat, to Redcar, the side they knocked out in the semi-final of the BSN competition, with the action at Wimborne Road next Wednesday in honour of Worrall who has the re-staging of his Testimonial meeting.
