There was an air of incredulity around the Wimborne Road stadium at around 21.50hrs on Wednesday night as even the most ardent of Poole followers could not have predicted the 62-28 score that the Pirates posted in the first leg of their BSN final against Glasgow.
With a thirty four point advantage in the bag to take with them on Friday 21st July, this piece of silverware is now only Poole's to lose, as they need just a further twenty nine points to secure the aggregate victory over their Scottish rivals.
Without recording a last place across all fifteen heats of the first leg, the Pirates lived up to team boss Dan Ford's beliefs over the ability of this septet, and they strung together a solid all-round performance, one in which skipper Steve Worrall commemorated his move out of the number one berth by scoring an excellent five ride paid maximum.
"That was a lot better from me tonight" admitted a happy Worrall, "it was more of what I know I am capable of doing and what I've shown I can do over the last couple of years. So, personally, I am really happy with my own performance and from a team's point of view, well I honestly did not expect the final scoreline to be what it was. "
Speaking of the recent absence of Wimborne Road race nights, Worrall commented "You know, it can work against us as we've not had a home match now for two weeks since my meeting and Adam [Roynon] wasn't even in that so he's not been on the track for over three weeks , so you think well, it can either set us back or push us on a bit as we are hungry to get back at home, so I guess it was that we were all hungry tonight and wanted it that extra bit. Yesterday's rain helped the track. You can't beat natural water. It waters it evenly and it gets into the base and it soaked in well last night and I don't know if anyone noticed but they didn't get covered in dust tonight, which is better for us too, as it opens the track a little more, the starts are better. It showed in the score tonight. We loved it, they hated it. You know it has given us a big advantage now to take to their place and that is somewhere we have all rode well in the past and we know what we've got to do now. Obviously winning the trophy is the main thing, so no heroes, keep it close and we should come out on top."
Richard Lawson assumed the number one jacket vacated by Worrall and with partner Anders Rowe powered the Pirates off to a perfect start with a 5-1, even against Chris Harris. It was an advantage that the Pirates steadily built on as the Tigers offered little in resistance, Harris apart. With only three heats shared, powerful Poole recorded heat advantages in twelve of the fifteen races, five of which were maximum 5-1's.
