ADRENALINE GOT ME THROUGH CLAIMS CLRC WINNER MASTERS

24/08/22

The SGB Championship's top averaged rider, Sam Masters rode through the pain barrier, walked away from an horror crash and still won his second league riders title in an eventful night at Wimborne Road.

Masters, who along with fellow Australian Ryan Douglas had taken the direct route to the final, the pair of them scoring 12 points each, but in the quest for glory they collided at the first turn and both flew into the air-fence. Remarkably both were able to walk away from the crash and the track crew quickly made the running repairs to allow the final to be re-run. The decision had already been made that all four riders - Lewis Kerr and Poole skipper Danny King, the two who had progressed from the semi-final - were eligible for that re-start but sadly Douglas was unable to take his place.

"It was adrenaline that got me through it all" admitted a jubilant Masters who didn't put a foot wrong in the second staging of the final. "I have to thank my boys back in the pits who did an awesome job of getting the bike together. It was a bit twisted and needed some work done to it. I hope that Dougie (Ryan Douglas) is going to be ok. We are team-mates at Wolverhampton and it was a pretty high speed crash we had. I was riding through the pain-barrier all night and that is why I knew I needed to make the starts. I just don't have the strength to chase from the back and so was pleased to make the start in that final. It's nice to have won this for the second time, the last time I wasn't fancied at all for it and now I have won one by being amongst the favourites."

That win for the Edinburgh number one broke the hearts of Poole fans who had been hoping that skipper King could bring the title home and the manner in which he began the meeting , it looked as if it was going to be a foregone conclusion. "I messed things up in my third ride. It was that gate one again, I don't know what it is about that position but I haven't been getting off it very well at all lately. But I plugged away and felt good out there as I had a lot of speed but Sam was just too good in that final and I couldn't do anything about catching him. He did well to come back from the crash. I had a good view of it as I was preparing my cut back and could see what was going to happen, thankfully I was able to get the bike down quickly enough."

Poole's second representative, Richard Lawson also reached the semi-finals but his night ended with a forlorn chase on Lewis Kerr .

1st S.Masters (Edinburgh) 2nd D.King (Poole) 3rd L. Kerr (Redcar) 4th R.Douglas (Scunthorpe)
