PIRATES UNBEATEN IN SCOTLAND
The Poole 'Wessex Marine' Pirates made it a Scottish league double when they punctured Glasgow's unbeaten league start to the season,...
GB International Drew Kemp signed off his stint in the reserve berth by scooping his second Rider of the Night award in three meetings, as he roared to a paid eleven return which helped the Pirates get back on the winning trail as they beat the Berwick Bandits 49-41.
The July averages sees Kemp move into the main body of the team with Ben Cook dropping in to a reserve position. But it was this duo that guaranteed the victory on the night when they had to twice combine for a 5-1, after the eye-catching debutant Jonas Knudsen took a full pirouette in the first staging of the penultimate as he hunted down the two Pirates.
Celebrating his Wessex Marine nomination, Kemp admitted "Consistency was something I was aiming for last year but without too much success but I seem to have found a bit just now. It is not perfect at the minute but two double figure scores on the bounce is always a positive and yeah, it's nice to come away with a good meeting."
Despite the victory the Pirates were lacking in race winners as they only picked up six - Kemp and Steve Worrall claiming two a-piece, Danny King producing a long overdue one and Cook taking the flag in that match clinching penultimate race, whilst the Bandits recorded nine - Harris had five to his name and both Leon Flint and Knudsen were twice winners. But a mid-meeting spell of five maximum heat scores - three in favour of Poole and two to the Bandits, along with the re-run heat fourteen was enough to see the Pirates collect their first win in four matches and moved up to second place in the league table, where they currently sit twelve points behind leaders Leicester, who gained further ground with an away win at Oxford. The Pirates stand a point clear of Glasgow and two over Plymouth and they are next in action on Friday (8th July) week when they travel to Edinburgh before completing their away league allocation of fixtures at Berwick the following evening.
