Shining Rising Star Danyon Hume was a delighted recipient of the Wessex Marine Rider of the Night Award after a paid 9 performance helped Poole to a massive 58-32 league win against the Kent Kings.
Accepting the trophy Hume admitted "Well that was a lot better than last time I was here and I was pleased with how things went tonight. I am learning all the time and I was happy to have played my part in the team tonight."
Hume and fellow reserve Ben Cook provided excellent support for the main body of the Pirates who had their heat leaders - Steve Worrall (14), Rory Schlein 12+1 and Danny King (8) - scoring more points combined (34) than the Kent team total, which was dominated by a vintage performance from former Pirate Scott Nicholls.
43 year old Nicholls rolled back the years to provide a single handed resistance to the Pirates, who were perhaps a bit tentative with two shared heats to open with. But the home side quickly found the cruise control and only Nicholls, who flew to an opening heat win, was able to live with them.
Nicholls prevented the reliable pairing of Steve Worrall and Stefan Nielsen claiming a second 5-1 of the meeting in heat 5 as he took full advantage of a momentary loss of control by Nielsen to move into second place behind Worrall. The King's number one then made a telling pass on Danny King in heat seven, as the visitors recorded their only heat advantage of the night.
There was more excellent racing between King and Nicholls in heat 11 and again it was the visiting captain who came out on top before he then made it a personal hat-trick over Poole's captain, King in heat 13, although that battle was for second and third as Rory Schlein was clear out ahead.
Nicholls completed his excellent performance with a superb chase on Steve Worrall, after taking advantage of a wide run from Schlein, and that denied Worrall a perfect night's work, admitting afterwards "I guess riding at number three suits me, I expect the others would love to have that position."
But it was Hume's efforts, particularly in heat four when he sweetly passed Dan Gilkes to join King on a 5-1 and again in heat 12 when he hunted down Ben Morley to convert a shared heat into a Poole advantage that really caught the eye of the meeting sponsors.
