IN THESE TURBULENT TIMES, LET'S REMEMBER THE TURBO TWINS

28/03/20

In modern day speedway they became one of the greatest double acts, flying under the banner Turbo Twins, coming together in the same side for the first time on April 4th 2010 and last racing together for Poole on May 1st 2013.

Chris Holder and Darcy Ward were in the same Pirates side on 111 occasions and in 33 of those matches did not appear in a same heat, but, there were 158 heats when they did partner each other and Poole fans knew inevitably that they would be in for a treat.

The two Aussies - Holder from Appin, Sydney and Ward from Nanango, Queensland - demonstrated a kind of telepathic awareness of each other, despite not having ridden much together before both joining the Pirates, but when out on track  all too often Poole fans were left on the edge of their seats especially when opposition riders out-trapped the pair!

From those 158 heats the Turbo Twins registered no fewer than 78 maximum heat scores, and recorded a further 26 4-2 advantages. In stark contract only 16 occasions did they actually concede heats to the opposition, 11 times only a second could best be managed by them and just five heats went in favour of the opponents by a maximum 5-1.

One person who has 'called the Twins home' on many occasions, Pirates meeting presenter Nigel Leahy, succinctly sums up what the duo meant to Poole fans. " Who could deny that the Turbo Twins brought something extra special to tracks up and down the country and we were so very privileged to see them weekly at Poole. It was an unforgettable era punctuated by unforgettable moments where matches were electrified by their exploits. I think we all miss those races that brought the crowd to their feet in a crescendo of noise from the grandstand. I acknowledge that over the years there have been some great partnerships but I feel truly privileged to have been there in the thick of the terrific Turbo Twins."
