ADAM NAMED IN GB SQUAD

23/06/16

Adam Ellis has been named in Alun Rossiter's 10-man squad for the 2016 FIM Monster Energy Speedway World Cup to be held next month.

As host nation, the Lions are seeded direct to the Final at Belle Vue on Saturday July 30, meaning Rossiter has plenty of time to further consider his starting line-up for the meeting.

Captain Tai Woffinden is joined by the top four riders from the recent British Final at the National Speedway Stadium – new champion Danny King, home star Craig Cook, 18-year-old Robert Lambert and another Belle Vue man in Steve Worrall.

Further experience in the squad is provided by former multiple British Champions Chris Harris and Scott Nicholls, whilst Worrall's twin brother Richie is also called up.

The squad is completed by World Under-21 Final competitors Josh Bates and Adam Ellis, with an Under-21 rider to be named by each country as reserve for each meeting under a new regulation.

Rossiter said: "We're fortunate this year in that our options are a little greater than they have been in the past with a few more riders coming through, and obviously recent events have given me a lot to think about.

"We're at home, and we want the country to get behind the team. The atmosphere at our home qualifiers over the last few years has been fantastic, and we want the same again at Belle Vue – it's our best chance for a medal in a long time.

"Of course I'm not going to please everybody, but I don't think I'm a million miles away from what most people would agree on with my selections.

"It's important for everyone to understand that we all have to nominate an Under-21 to be at reserve, which is why we have more riders from that age group in the squad than we've had in the past.

"But the reserve can only ride in the meeting if someone is withdrawn injured, so there's no point in placing an Under-21 there instead of in the starting line-up if I feel that rider is in my top four anyway – we would want him to have the maximum number of rides on the night.

"If I'm honest, there are a couple of riders who probably would have been in the squad and will be disappointed to have missed out, but I've had to make certain decisions because of naming the Under-21s, and that did limit some people's chances.

"We still have over a month to go before the Final, so I'll be closely monitoring the form of all the riders in the squad before making a final decision."
