Dorset darts phenomena Scott 'Scotty Dog' Mitchell held his nerve and beat the three time winner Martin Adams (58) to pocket £100,000 prize money and secure the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship at the Lakeside Village, Frimley Green on Sunday night.
After his semi-final 6-0 whitewash of Canadian qualifier Jeff Smith on Saturday, 44 year old Mitchell, a devoted Poole Pirates follower, found life much tougher against Adams Iin the best of thirteen set final with the match going 'down to the wire'.
Poole boss Matt Ford witnessed it all from a hotel room in St.Johann im Pongau, Austria and as soon as Mitchell threw the winning dart issued the following message: "I am on a ski-ing break with Andy King of Bathroom Logic and my good friend Darren Anderton, the ex-England international footballer but we simply had to be glued to the set to see how Scott fared. We are extremely proud of him, it is an amazing achievement and he looked so cool as he kept his nerve to check-out in the final set with double tops. It is great news for the county and I am really honoured that Scott supports the Pirates in the way he does."
In a match full of ebbs and flows Adams forced a deciding set with a 91 check out in the fifth leg of the 12th set but Mitchell's response was amazing as he won the opening leg of the 13th set with an incredible 158 check-out and then hit double tops in the second to give himself the advantage. Adams finished off the third leg with a nervy double 16 finish to keep the match alive but Mitchell opened the fourth leg with a maximum 180 his 8th of the match. But Adams looked strong and with two tons and his 15th maximum had a chance of shooting out on 121 but failed to take it which left Mitchell needing double twenty to take the title and the Bournemouth born player didn't disappoint.
