RESULT: POOLE 59 LEICESTER 31

Darcy Ward's turbulent week continued as he took a heavy fall in heat 15 of Pirates' romp against a troubled Leicester side.

The Poole skipper who had missed Sunday's Grand Prix in Latvia saw his bike catch fire in his first ride in Sweden on Tuesday night and in the final race against the Lions at Wimborne Road, as he attempted to push Poole through the 60 point barrier, he bounced off the airfence, reared and landed awkwardly, with concerns over the strength of his previously damaged knee ligaments.

It was a sour end to a night of success that had the lesser lights of Josh Grajczonek and Kyle Newman go through their cards unbeaten, Newman collecting a maiden "Full" Elite league maximum just 42 days after recording his first top flight unbeaten performance.

A delighted Newman admitted "I am really happy with that and I am glad I am getting the chance  to really show what I am capable of and for sure the draft scheme is really helping me. Obviously though it means I cannot break into the team proper which would normally have been my target but scoring as many points for the club and helping the team to win matches is what it's about."

Grajczonek's paid maximum came not without a scare as he took a heavy fall along with Leicester's Krzysztof Buczkowski in heat 10, when the visitor was on the Lions' second tactical ride of the night. Both riders clouted the fence hard and afterwards Grajczonek admitted to "feeling a bit sore" but put the incident down to the perils of speedway racing.

Buczkowski was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the meeting with a shoulder injury meaning that the Lions not only started with 6 riders but also finished with 6!

Their number one Jason Doyle was delayed in traffic due to the closure of the A34 and arrived just ahead of the start of heat 5. Until then Poole had dominated proceedings but Lions' guest Lewis Bridger, in for their skipper Simon Stead who was ruled out with tonsilitis, produced a pacey winning ride to lead home the strong combination of Janowski and Ward.

Doyle then combined with Buczkowski for a 5-1 over Przemyslaw Pawlicki and Vaclav Milik, to suggest that they might be able to keep the Pirates honest, but after Newman and Grajczonek had paired up to reverse that score and Milik and Pawlicki superbly staved off Bridger's tactical ride attempts the Pirates slipped into cruise control and the result was only going to go one way.
