LEICESTER 43 PIRATES 47

24/05/15

Poole skipper Maciej Janowski marked his return to the Pirates side with an imperious 15 point maximum as the Dorset side maintained their excellent early season away form, with 14 league points now yielded from a possible 20.

Janowski claimed his full-house the hard way, beating fellow GP star Jason Doyle, the Lions' number one, in four of his five rides on a night which saw the two sides and Bank Holiday crowd endure two interruptions during the meeting to allow for the blinding sun to set.

The Pole, making his first appearance for the Pirates since breaking two bones in his knee at Coventry on April 10th was in scintillating form and shrugged off the pressure from the hard-to-beat ex-Pirate each time they met. Their best battle was in heat 11 when they traded the lead before the present Poole man powered clear to win by a decent margin and help Poole restore their early lead as Dakota North collected third place.

The Pirates pushed on from this stage with their two reserves Paul Starke and Kyle Newman claiming their second heat advantage over their Lions' peers, with a 5-1 in heat 12 having previously claimed a 4-2 Starke-led heat two gain.

Another Doyle v Janowski clash was quickly decided in heat 13 but Dave Watt couldn't find the form he had shown in heat 10 when sheer dogged determination had won him the first bend battle over Lions' guest Josh Grajczonek and their impressive Pole Szymon Wozniak, as the Poole Aussie this time could only concede third place to Grajczonek but Poole were able to maintain a six point lead with two heats remaining.

That was reduced to just two when Grajczonek and Wozniak gave the Lions hope with a convincing 5-1 over North and the out-of-sorts Chris Holder to set up a dramatic, if not late in the evening, last heat.

It took three attempts to complete; the first courting controversy as Doyle went down at the pit turn under pressure from Janowski but referee Tony Steele benevolently decreed no punishment. Then North and Grajczonek collided with each other as they fought for the entrance to the first turn before the third and final attempt saw Janowski superbly speed round the outside as Doyle and Grajczonek were putting the squeeze on North.

So, together as a full 1-7 racing unit for only the second time this season the Pirates were rewarded with a hard fought, but in truth fully deserved away win
