Kings Lynn Stars v Poole Pirates
8/07/19It's become something of a habit for the No.1 Carpet Cleaning Pirates to finish a meeting with less riders than they began with and the pieced together side that went into action at King's Lynn was no exception, guest Ricky Wells withdrawing after two rides without scoring, aggravating the shoulder injury that the previous week had ruled him out of Belle Vue's side.
Wells wasn't alone in the Poole all-comers camp to have a blank scorechart after two rides however. Aaron Summers and skipper Josh Grajczonek both hadn't made a deposit into the Pirates' account whilst Kyle Newman had the wrong end of a 5-1 to his credit from the reserves heat.
That was the second 5-1 the visitors had suffered as the Stars set about their intentions with some intensity after Jack Holder had surrendered an early second place in the opening heat.
Nicolai Klindt made an encouraging gate in heat three but it only served a brief purpose as Riss swept by him coming out of turn two, the Stars moving into a ten point progressive lead. Newman incurred a tapes disqualification that brought Wells in for, what was to prove his last ride of the night but he was an also-ran. Holder however made a super run out of gate four to claim the scalp of Craig Cook and there was some pride, on a night when generally the makeshift Pirates struggled, in heat four as Nicolai Klindt battled hard to fend off Thomas Jorgensen thus holding that deficit at ten.
Michael Palm-Toft quickly picked off Holder in heat six with Robert Lambert having to settle for third place.
The first attempt at heat seven saw Grajczonek get out the gate cleanly, but partner Klindt had moved too early and the start was called back. The re-run proved to be a totally different outcome with the Pirates conceding their third 5-1 defeat .
Aaron Summers battled hard just to split Palm-Toft and Simon Lambert in the protected heat eight, Poole opting to cover the vacancy provided by Wells' withdrawal by using Klindt as a tactical substitute in the ninth heat. The Dashing Dane was quickly into his groove but he couldn't hold out from attack by Erik Riss before allowing Holder to have a run at the German. Out immediately in heat ten Klindt had no answers to Robert Lambert but was able to ruin Palm-Toft's unbeaten sequence with an excellent move on turn four to switch lines on his compatriot.
Two thirds of the meeting completed and Poole down by as many points as they had scored (40-20), it would be a remarkable recovery from here. Grajzonek looked back to his more recent fashion as he led heat 11 from Kerr with Summers holding third place at the time backmarker Craig Cook fell mid-race between turns three and four. Referee Mick Bates awarded positions at the time he hit the red lights, Poole banking a heat advantage at last!
Klindt left his arrival at tapes in heat 12 extremely late but his race only lasted until the first turn as he crashed out awkwardly , causing a re-run. Newman was able to split Riss and Simon Lambert but Poole couldn't stop the Stars roaring into the fifties in heat 13 as Cook and Robert Lambert offered no openings for the pursuing Holder.
Grajczonek had the taste of wins now and took heat 14 before Holder closed out the night with another beating of Robert Lambert, this time for three points, the Pirates having little to cheer them on their long drive back to Dorset.
