Report: Poole Pirates v Redcar Bears

16/08/23

With a top spot in the table for any score of fifty or more the Wessex Pirates were delivered an early warning when both Kyle Newman and, to a larger extent, Richard Lawson were outgated.

Lawson felt the full draught of the roost and by the end of the first lap was struggling for visibility, having been well filled in. But Anders Rowe continued where he had left off the previous week, away and gone as the tapes rose. Guest Joe Thompson tried hard, always in the hunt after having been squeezed out on the pit turn first time round. Ben Cook delivered an awesome ride as he swept past fast gating, and heat one winner, Erik Riss. The German had to switch to defensive tactics to then hold out the fast approaching other Cook, Zach. Former skipper (and stand-in one for the Bears) Danny King was able to hold on from current captain Steve Worrall whilst Thompson, making an impressive start, was able to pull ever further clear of Connor Coles.  Heat five saw Danyon Hume anticipate the gate big time and he was well clear into turn one but the Cook boys weren't going to let him get away with it even if the referee did! Ben passed on the first lap, Zach leaving his final move to the last.
A super move by Kyle Newman on the first lap of heat six allowed him to support Lawson's lead, the two on their way to a 5-1 when King fell at the third turn of lap two, provoking the referee to award the result. Rowe was slow off the line but very quick to pass Connor Bailey round turn four of heat seven and take up third place, a position that soon became second when Riss began to slow up ahead of his race retirement. With both sides switching their reserves around in heat eight it was Poole who gained, Newman and Rowe dominating the first turn and generating a tapes to flag 5-1. The time was ripe for Redcar to deploy Riss as a tactical substitute but there was no significant return from it for the Bears as both the Cook's went by him, again as in an earlier heat, Ben doing it early and Zach timing his move until the final few yards. Heat ten saw Riss move and gain an advantage over Lawson which went unpunished but the race was eventually stopped when Newman reared awkwardly on the back straight and became stranded mid-track with his machine finishing about five metres ahead of him after going airborne. It was a more even start in the re-run and Lawson showed his speed, although Bailey did well to keep pace with him. Heat eleven saw a clear win for Worrall but Rowe, who had earlier moved into third, couldn't quite reclaim it after Hume had fought back well, although there was little to choose between them as they crossed the line
Points were dropped when Ben Cook shed a chain whilst leading heat twelve, which gifted the visitors a 5-1. Then King made a flyer in heat thirteen with Lawson pushing hard throughout. Hume was holding out the interests of Worrall for a while. After Worrall had moved into third Hume crashed out and the heat was shared. All three league points were fully guaranteed in heat fourteen as Rowe worked his way into third over the early stages, whilst  Zach Cook ws chasing hard after Riss,  but he was not able to get in quite close enough to put in effective challenge. Riss fell in a tight first turn of the final heat and with all four back it proved to be Worrall and Lawson who had all the pace, returning a 5-1 to move Poole to the top of the tree.
